In this role, she plays a key part in the day-to-day running of the practice while continuing to oversee a busy caseload.

Katerina has also become one of the firm’s specialists in Proceeds of Crime matters, managing numerous POCA cases and achieving consistently strong results for clients. Her expanding expertise in this area, combined with her broad criminal litigation experience, has made her an invaluable member of the team.

Some of Katerina’s notable cases

Our client had originally been charged with three counts of fraud relating to the fraudulent application of COVID-related Bounce Back Loans, totalling £130k.
The Prosecution initially sought to recover £347,000, including tainted gifts.

However, through detailed representations drafted by Katerina Iwai and a successful challenge by Ini Udom and Georgina Lane of 5 St Andrew’s Hill to the Prosecution’s case the defence secured a significant reduction.

The final available amount was agreed at £1, reflecting a fair and proportionate outcome for our client.

After sentencing, the court assessed that the benefit from criminal conduct amounted to £154,753.88. On instruction from our client Katerina submitted an application to challenge this figure, presenting arguments on a number of criteria

The judge accepted submissions by Katerina working with Bartholomew O’Toole from 5 King’s Bench Walk , resulting in a revised benefit figure of £80,548.85 — almost a 50% reduction.

Our client had been accused of intimidating a complainant in a sensitive assault case involving a family member. The case was built on witness testimony, circumstantial evidence, and mobile phone data — and involved live evidence from co-defendants and the complainant.

After just a few hours of jury deliberation, our client was acquitted on all counts with unanimous not guilty verdicts.
