Mia Twomey has had an excellent result on a recent case which has highlighted her tenacity and determination to get the right result for one of our clients.
In 2023 our client was taken into custody and arrested for possession of a bladed article. We were initially called to represent her as a duty case however an interview never took place because she was in no fit state to be questioned. Our client was 60 years old at the time with a number of mental health issues and was found in possession of a knife that she planned to use in an attempt to take her own life.
Trial proceeds to crown court
Mia intially made representations arguing there was no public interest in proceeding with the case. Our client had been a teacher for her entire life and had no previous convictions. She was in a traumatic position as her children had been kidnapped by her ex-husband and taken overseas. If this wasn’t bad enough, she was also having problems with her landlord and her electricity had been cut off for months. Her first appearance at court was initially adjourned because she was too hysterical and couldn’t enter a plea. However, a trial was eventually scheduled for January 2025 at the Crown Court.
Mia Twomey and Harry Martin made further representations arguing there was no public interest in proceeding and highlighted the circumstances behind the case. This included the fact that she was addressing her issues with the help of carers and a safety plan had been made by domestic abuse team. We provided a psychiatrist report showing that she had been in a state of depression and had OCD. There was a letter from an OCD support group stating how severe conditions lead to suicide and how they have helped her throughout the last 2 years.
We’re pleased to confirm that on the basis of these reps the Prosecution agreed to drop the case and our client was left to continue her rehabilitation. After her case closed our client left a really positive review on the Review Solicitors website thanking Mia for her sympathetic approach and Harry for his advocacy skills. We wish her well
